Old wiki, new uses... the utility of the wiki is growing. In terms of assessing how effective my actions were in helping me to meet my goals I would say I'd give myself an A. The wiki is up and running and the students are accessing it. I feel a sense of accomplishment and going forward I know that I could repeat the process for whatever my instructional goal might be.
If I had to think of a question I might still have or anything I still might need to learn it would be in the area of how many different uses the wiki could be used for. I am starting a PBL project and I will post instructions for the project and use the wiki for a journal reflection spot at the end of the project. I know that as my instructional calendar unfolds I will continue to pull in uses for the wiki. I wish I had started the wiki at the beginning of the year instead of at the end. It is exciting to think of class wiki's being a solid part of my teaching repertoire. I am telling other teachers how they could incorporate it in their classes.

Dan to Ruth,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your wiki is quite a success. I have to admit I am a little jealous, and look forward to using wikis more in the classroom. From the sounds of it, you and your students seem to be finding new and unique uses for your wiki. It sounds like your wiki has become a truly collaborative place where students can both access and post information thoughts and ideas.
I think about our use of wikis for the next three weeks in this class and how that could be translated to the classroom. Wikis offer a truly collaborative experience, especially for those willing to embrace collaboration. For those students not motivated or “into” group work, wikis may not be as effective. I also think that wikis offer much use outside of the classroom and therein lies their true value. It’s no surprise that many students see school and technology use as mutually exclusive practices. Your wiki can provide a gateway and access to learning in places and at times not normally “reserved” for school. How cool would it be to see a student posting or working with another student on a wiki on a Friday night?
I’m sure you will continue to find uses for your wiki. Please keep us informed of your success and let us know what else you are doing with your students. Congrats on your success with the wiki.

Ruth,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your classroom wiki is working out so well. Please continue to share what you've learned with colleagues because just like our students we learn best from each other. I don't know if you have any class field trips planned for the near future but creation of a wiki can reinforce information learned. For example: If my students visited the various Spanish missions, they could create a class wiki(similar to Wikipedia)which focuses on the topic. To reinforce what Dan said, wikis are also a great way to get students to work as a group without the typical group set up and dynamics.
